About the Book

“Shaffert infuses Midwestern details into the life of myriad characters searching for love and security during a few winter months of discontent. A romance writer finds her book on the dollar table at a neighborhood bookstore; a divorcee, ‘falling back into love’ with her ex finds a nude portrait he drew of her best friend; a single woman, straight laced and efficient has built a lucrative business selling sex toys; a sixteen year old meets her skinnier more popular friends at a DAV to try on clothes the same day she receives an email meant for her father’s adulterous lover. Readers and book people will revel in the bookstore banter of Peaches, Plum and their eclectic collection of customers, lovers and writers. Devils in the Sugar Shop delights and affirms the nature of the human heart.“
- Sarah Bagby, Watermark Books & Café, Wichita, KS

“Deception, adultery, stiff cocktails, nervous breakdowns, innocently euphemistic sex-toy parties, maternal drag queens, and inept suburban swingers. I love this comical but deeply sympathetic tale of an unsuccessful erotic novelist, a demented but harmless stalker, an artist, and a bookstore owner, plus their assorted husbands, lovers and children. This is a novel that makes you laugh and think about life and love.”
- Lisa Baudoin, The Book Vault, Oskaloosa, IA

“Shoes, sex toys, shopping – something for everyone. Timothy Schaffert is a man who gives new meaning to life in Omaha.”
- Nancy Rips, The Bookworm, Omaha, NE

“Surprising, vibrant.”
- Publishers Weekly

“This novel of desire, longing, love, and enduring friendship is like an expensive box of chocolates: each silken morsel is luscious and approvingly decadent, and with every bite you don’t necessarily know what you’re going to get.”
- Library Journal, starred review

DEVILS IN THE SUGAR SHOP follows the lives of a group of women friends in Omaha who are struggling with various romantic troubles and all of whom are about to convene for a pre-Valentine’s Tupperware-like home party for “marital aides.” The evening, meant to be a lark, changes how they each view their lives and relationships—and not just their romances but also their friendships and relationships with their children.

With his characteristic touch, Schaffert places an unusual cast in unusual circumstances and creates a quirky, comic tale that is similar to TALES OF THE CITY, or even a cross between “Sex in the City” and “Desperate Housewives”—and yet vintage Schaffert. This breezy story has all the spice and humor to make a great leisure read. It also makes a great book club choice.

TIMOTHY SCHAFFERT is the award-winning author of two previous novels: The Phantom Limbs of the Rollow Sisters (BlueHen/Penguin Putnam) and The Singing and Dancing Daughters of God (Unbridled Books). He lives in Omaha, Nebraska, where he is the director of the (Downtown) Omaha Lit Fest and a contributing editor for the Prairie Schooner literary journal.
