About the Book

“Sometimes a book is so good it just vibrates with life. HICK by Andrea Portes is that good. Once you start reading it, you won’t want to put it down. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will be amazed by this new writer.”
- Diana Cohen, Books & Company, Oconomowoc, WI

“Luli has a voice and determination that will keep you cheering for her and believing in her spirit as she marches and stumbles through a life of hard knocks and low down joints to discover her place in this world. It’s a rough and tumble ride that is worth every spunky word and clear headed insight this young girl is able to wrestle out of the crazy life she was brought into.“
- Lisa Baudoin, The Book Vault, Oskaloosa, IA

“For everyone whose childhood wasn’t perfect; for everyone whose parents disappointed; for everyone whose adolescent dreams were changed or abandoned; for everyone, there’s HICK by Andrea Portes. Abandoned by her parents, 13 year-old Luli decides to hitch hike to Las Vegas in search of a sugar daddy. What she finds isn’t as sweet as she’s imagined.”
- Keri Holmes, The Kaleidoscope, Hampton, IA

“I loved HICK! I’ve been to Palmyra, Nebraska and she got it right! And I think the book will be good for sophisticated young adults as well. It’s a powerful story of independence and growing up despite the odds.”
- Ellen Scott, The Bookworm, Omaha, NE

HICK is the story of Luli McMullen—feisty, precocious, and out on her own at 13. Luli is running away from Palmyra, Nebraska to Las Vegas, where she plans to escape her disturbing present and even less hopeful future by finding herself a sugar daddy. Raw and edgy, hilarious, hopeful and heartbreaking, HICK is at once a true-to-life portrait of an inviolable spirit threatened by drugs and alcohol, teen sex and crime, and a stubbornly idealistic novel about growing up in America.

Luli’s story is loosely based on Portes’ own childhood. ANDREA PORTES is a young writer who is becoming a cultural force in the hippest parts of Los Angeles. She grew up outside Lincoln, Nebraska, later shuffling between Illinois, Texas, Brazil, North Dakota, and North Carolina before attending Bryn Mawr College. She received her MFA in Theater from UC San Diego and became a script reader for Paramount Pictures. She now lives in Los Angeles and is a nightlife columnist for several websites.
