About the Book
“This Water Goes North by Dennis Weidemann is a wonderful adventure story for readers of any age. In 1979 four young and rather inexperienced Iowans had a vision of making a 1400-mile trek from the winding Red River in Minnesota, across the scary 300-mile Lake Winnipeg, through 400 more miles of backcountry to reach the Hudson Bay –and they did it-no sponsors, no cell phones, no GPS’s-just good fortune, a few angels, and good people they met along the way. The weather, though rough at many times, did not defeat them and their positive outlook and camaraderie kept the expedition on track. I found the book to be an enjoyable read and have gladly hand-sold it to a variety of our customers.”
- Janet Hart, Manager, Book People, Sioux City, Iowa“For a fine story about the dreams, resilience, and joys of youth-and youth remembered –This Water Goes North is a trip well worth taking.”

In the spring of 1979, four Midwestern farm boys loaded two beat-up canoes and set off on a 1,400 mile voyage to the fabled York Factory outpost on Hudson Bay. Armed with leaky tents, plenty of ignorance, and the indomitable spirit of youth, they traveled halfway across the continent in search of nothing, but found much.
From the bow seat, Weidemann weaves an inspiring story of buoyant and unfettered college-age Iowans who left behind their studies, careers, families and cares to canoe some of North America’s most expansive waters and through some of its most scenic wilderness, stopping along the way to meet some of its most endearing inhabitants.
Starting from a tranquil lake in the farm country of Minnesota and ending up just 100 miles from Churchill, polar bear capital of the world, the unlikely explorers encounter a journey rich with near disasters, humorous escapades, and poignant understanding. Whether surviving treacherous rapids or inadvertently assisting bootleggers, they face each new experience with youthful zest and wonder.
This epic tale of discovery and dreams fulfilled will fan the adventurous fire of adolescence and rekindle the spark buried deep in adults.
Dennis Weidemann is a canoeist, an educator, and the director of communications for a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving quiet places. He lives in Madison, Wisconsin.
