Midwest Booksellers Choice Awards
Annually, our booksellers nominate and vote for their favorite books of the year. Eligible titles must have been published between May of the previous year and April of the current year, and must be pertinent to the region either in content or in regard to the author's hometown or current residence. Awards are presented in five categories: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, children's picture books, and young adult/middle grade.
Booksellers--Time to Nominate Your Favorite Titles
Please help us celebrate your favorite Midwest-related books of the year by voting for the 2016 Midwest Booksellers Choice Awards. Winners are selected via a two-round nomination/voting process. First up, nominations...
1. Download the spread sheet on the right. Publishers have submitted their Midwestern titles, and that list is in the Excel file on the right. Note that the nomination list is nonexhaustive and we encourage you to write in your favorites on the voting form if they are not listed on the nomination list.
2. Submit your favorite titles
Between now and May 31, 2016, use the form below to nominate your favorite titles as described. This process is driven by booksellers, not bookstores. Every nomination counts! Please encourage your entire staff to participate.
Please contact Robert at Robert@MidwestBooksellers.org with any questions.
When the nominations are in, we'll tally the results and product a list of the top three finalists in each of five genres: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Children's Picture Book, and YA & Middle Grade. Between June 1 and June 30, you'll vote on those finalists to determine the winners.
Publishers -- No longer accepting nominations for the 2016 Midwest Booksellers Choice Awards
In 2016 we invited publishers to nominate their eligible titles for inclusion on our longlist. An eligible title must have been published in its original edition between May of the previous year and April of the current year, and must pertain to MIBA's region (ND, SD, MN, WI, IL, IA, MO, KS, NE, and MI's UP) in theme, content, or origin of author. There is a $25 processing fee ($35 for nonmembers) for each title. The deadline to have titles included on our longlist is April 30. Note that All Midwest Connections Picks published within the date range are automatically included on the longlist.
Timeline and Voting Process
APRIL -- Publishers Nominate their Midwestern Titles
Beginning on April 1, publishers are invited to nominate their eligible titles to be included on our longlist. An eligible title must have been published in its original edition between May of the previous year and April of the current year, and must pertain to MIBA's region (ND, SD, MN, WI, IL, IA, MO, KS, NE, and MI's UP) in theme, content, or origin of author. MAY -- Booksellers Determine the Finalists
Booksellers use the longlist to help them vote on which three titles in each genre will be selected as finalists. This longlist is nonexhaustive, but provides a starting point to inspire booksellers regarding the many exemplary titles published in or about our region. Booksellers nominate up to three titles per genre.
JUNE -- Booksellers Vote to Determine the Winners
The top three nominated titles in each genre are announced as finalists (in the case of a tie, more than three finalists may appear). Booksellers vote for their favorites of the finalists by ranking 1 for their favorite, 2 for their second favorite, and 3 for their third favorite. If they have no opinion on a title, they can mark it 0 or leave it blank.
A Note on Scoring: Every title that receives a "1" receives 3 points, "2" gets 2 points, and "3" gets 1 point. If a bookseller leaves a title blank that title receives 0 points for that ballot. The sum total of these scores determines the winners.
JULY -- Winning publishers are contacted and Winners are Announced
Winners are determined in the first week of July. The winning publishers will be notified and asked whether the winning authors will be able to attend our trade show (as a part of attending the show, we also ask the 200 copies of the book or another related item be provided for the awards ceremony). The winners will be announced to the public and the booksellers in the second week of July.
