Publisher Participation Guidelines
If you're interested in receiving a physical monthly mailing of POS materials and advance reading copies of Midwest Connections Picks, email Robert Martin to make sure you're on the Midwest Connections Mailing List.
Use the materials to create a display in your store and send Robert a photo to be eligible for rebates. A devoted display earns your first $50 in rebates, and additional promotions for Midwest Connections Picks earn $25 in additional rebates. You can earn up to four additional rebates, for a total of $125 per month per store. For more information about rebates, click here.
Feel free to use our Midwest Connections logo in your online promotions.
Display each set of monthly picks for a two-month promotion period--so January picks should be on display through the end of February and so on. Track your sales for the entire promotion period.
Between the first and fifteenth of each month, fill out the rebate form for the promotion period that just ended. (For example, a January pick will be promoted in January and February, and you can request your rebate between March 1 and 15.
If you have an idea for a promotion that isn't listed on the rebate form, let us know. We generally accept creative promotional ideas.
Recent Bestsellers from MIdwest Connections
Booksellers regularly say they order Midwest Connections Picks in higher numbers when they otherwise may have passed on stocking the book, and also promote these titles in creative ways.
Midwest Connections Picks are curated by a committee of bookseller members of MIBA's board of directors. Eligible titles must have some connection to MIBA's region (IA, IL, NE, KS, MO, MN, ND, SD, WI, and the Upper Peninsula of MI). We encourage publishers to nominate titles to the program. We’re actively seeking a higher percentage of paperback originals, nonfiction, and children's books. Factor us into your marketing plans and recommend a group of titles per season. A limited number of slots across genres is available each month, so the sooner you recommend your books, the better.
To nominate a title, email Robert Martin to let him know you are interested and send a galley to each member of the committee. Download the Midwest Connections Committee Mailing list here. There is no fee to nominate a title.
If your title is selected, the cost of participation is $500. For this amount, you will receive:
Promotional material. Once the book is confirmed, we’ll post it to our website right away, so email us your promotional information: price, ISBN, format, ordering info, book jacket photo, author photo, a book trailer, and any other marketing materials our stores might find useful. Part of our promotion includes providing booksellers with an informational one-sheet including the following information, which we will request once the book is confirmed:
Galley mailing. We’ll give you a list of our stores best suited for promoting the title, hosting an event, etc. Please send ARCs (or finished books) along with a customized Midwest Connections letter, the stores at left (we'll send you an up-to-date xcel list of store addresses when the time comes). Include the Midwest Connections logo in the letter. We find it most effective to begin the letter with a positive blurb from an independent bookseller. Store owners recommend marking the outside of the package with the Midwest Connections logo so it rises to the top of their inbox. Here’s sample letters to review: written by publisher and written by an author.
Pair with additional advertising opportunities. To further spread the word for your forthcoming title, consider selecting another advertising option. For example, if you have only 50 galleys to send to booksellers, select the Dedicated Title Email to ensure all our booksellers are familiar with the book. If you are sending plenty of galleys but want the attention of the wider industry, select a banner ad on our website or in our weekly bestseller list. If you want to talk through the options, please email Robert.
Optional POS Materials. In addition to MIBA’s print materials, publishers are welcome to produce title-specific POS materials. These can be digital only—we will distribute them via email announcements and host them on our website—or you can include print copies with your galley and letter mailing.
Get the word out. Your titles enjoy a two-month promotional period, so engage us in whatever way we can. We’ll be happy to email our booksellers newsworthy info (great reviews, new video footage, author events, etc.) and post reviews, events, etc. to our social networking sites. We encourage you to actively use social media with the #MWConX hashtag.
