Nominating and Voting Procedures for MBA Member Bookstores
All nominated books must have subject matter which relates to our Midwest region. OR The author must live in one of our MBA member states. These states include Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and South Dakota.
Books which are eligible for our 2009 awards must have been published in either hardcover or paperback between May 1, 2008, and April 30, 2009.Five Midwest Booksellers’ Choice Awards are given: Adult Fiction, Adult Non-Fiction, Poetry, Children’s Picture Book, and Children’s Literature (including both fiction and non-fiction).
March 1 – April 30, 2009: Nominations
Booksellers can nominate 1-5 titles in each of the 5 categories: Adult Fiction, Adult Non-Fiction, Poetry, Children’s Picture Book, and Children’s Literature (including both fiction and non-fiction). All booksellers who work in a MBA member store can nominate titles, so multiple nominations per store are fine. Customers are welcome to suggest their favorite titles to their booksellers, too, but all nominations will be submitted by booksellers.
Booksellers will E-mail, fax or mail nominations to the MBA office during this time. You can do this on your own, if you wish. In addition, on March 1 MBA will send out a reminder with a nomination form which you are welcome to use. Booksellers are asked to include the title, author, publisher, ISBN, and the applicable award category when they nominate titles.
- 2009 MBA Book Awards Nomination Form (PDF)
- MBA is asking booksellers to do their best to be certain that a nominated book was published in either hardcover or paperback between May 1, 2008, and April 30, 2009.
- A nominated book either must have Midwest subject matter, or the author must live in one of our states (see above).
- MBA and our booksellers are giving MIDWEST awards, so we intend to choose books that have a broad enough Midwest regional interest to appeal to and sell at our stores across our Midwest territory. A title that is so very specific to any one locale that it would be unlikely to sell around the rest of the region is not the best title to nominate, even if it’s a great title for the store that considers nominating it.
May 5 – May 31, 2009: Voting for the Award Winners from the Nominated Titles
- 2009 MBA Book Awards Official Ballot (PDF)
- MBA will compile a list of all titles nominated by booksellers as we receive them during March and April. In early May, we will send out a ballot with the list of nominees to MBA member stores and ask all member booksellers to vote on their top titles — up to 5 titles per category.
- All booksellers who work in MBA member stores can vote. Thus, multiple votes per store are fine. However, each person must vote only one time. [Midwest booksellers are good at abiding by honor codes!] Booksellers will be able to E-mail, fax or mail their ballots to the MBA office.
- Booksellers can vote for just the categories they are familiar with, if desired. [Children's booksellers, for example, may not know much about the adult titles nominated.] MBA booksellers vote during this time. Deadline May 31 — all votes must be in the MBA office by this date.
- MBA will count the votes and determine which titles and authors our booksellers have chosen as the winners and the honorable mention recipients in each category! The top title in each category will be the winner. The second place title in each category will be the honorable mention recipient.
August 17, 2009: Awards Winners Announced
The official date for publicly announcing the winners of our MBA Midwest Book Awards will be August 17. Stores are notified by the end of July, before the public announcement, and promotional materials are available in plenty of time for stores to stock, display and promote our winners.
As soon as the winners are determined, MBA will work immediately with the publishers of the winning and honorable mention books to make sure that these titles are included in the 2009 MBA Catalog and that the authors will be able to participate in the 2009 MBA Trade Show in September.
