Jólabókaflóð, (pronounced YO-la-po-ka-flohd, which roughly translates to “Yule Book Flood”) is a widespread Icelandic practice of gifting BOOKS and chocolate for the holidays. Duluth MN's newest bookstore Zenith Books is bringing this fun and restorative celebration to its customers from Sunday, December 10 to Sunday, December 24.
During these two weeks, the store will have free hot cider, author events, readings and other fun community activities. Zenith Bookstore will traditionally gift-wrap book purchases with a complimentary Terroir Chocolate* bar (made in Fergus Falls, MN).
“Duluthians embrace winter with a love of the outdoors, but we’re also an active literary community,” says Zenith Bookstore owner Bob Dobrow. “Another way we can enjoy the winter months is through this wonderful Nordic tradition of giving books and chocolate. Settling in with a book, chocolate and warm beverage is an incredibly comforting way to spend a winter’s night.”
In Iceland, the annual Book Flood begins with the release of a catalog of new books distributed free to every Icelandic home. In Duluth, Zenith Bookstore is now distributing its “Give the Gift of Books” catalog, produced by the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association. “The catalog is beautifully illustrated,” says co-owner Angel Dobrow, “with pages of outstanding book choices for holiday gifting.”
