To all who participated in the
2009 MBA Trade Show on September 25-26 –
THANK YOU!
We’re delighted that so many of you — booksellers, publishers, distributors, reps, vendors, authors, librarians, teachers, and other book business colleagues – were able to join us. The show was a very busy two days, and the mood was focused and upbeat, highlighted by the many strong titles coming out this fall and by the terrific authors featured at this year’s special events. Heartfelt thanks to all the publishers who brought their authors and complimentary copies of their books to the show!
We especially want to thank our Trade Show SPONSORS, whose support was crucial to making the show a success: Above the Treeline, American Booksellers Association, Baker & Taylor, Common Good Books, 800-CEO-READ, Emerging Leaders Council, HarperCollins Publishers, Ingram Book Company & Ingram Publisher Services, MIPA, NAIPR, Nodin Press, Random House, Simon & Schuster/Atria Books, Tristan Publishing, The Twin Cities Crime Writers Coop, Wiley.
You can read more about the MBA Trade Show right now, courtesy of our book industry media colleagues at PW Daily, Shelf Awareness, and the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Additional PW Daily articles on children’s books and the Children’s Book & Author Breakfast are available, too. Thanks for the great coverage, everyone!

Why Your Company Should Exhibit
at the Midwest Booksellers Association Trade Show
“Your presence at our trade show makes you more money from us!”
– Nancy Simpson, Book Vault, Oskaloosa, IA“Stick with us, we are still very much in the game.”

Next Chapter Bookshop (formerly Harry W. Schwartz), Mequon, Wisconsin
I am planning on bringing as many of my staff as I can to the regional trade shows. As a new bookstore, I can’t afford to send many people to BEA. The regional shows will be an opportunity for my staff that I feel is invaluable. The contacts that we make, the publishers that we talk to, and what we learn are a great asset to how we do our jobs. Just like our interactions with our sales reps, the chance to speak with you about the books you have coming out and how they are being marketed arms us with the information we need to sell to our customers.
This personal interaction is not something that can be accomplished through a catalog or online. I know that it is expensive to represent yourselves at these shows, and it is difficult to measure any return. Please know that the more exposure my staff has to the books you want to sell, the more likely we are to sell them and recommend them to our customers. You do not need to give us tons of galleys or freebies. Let’s just meet and talk about the books!
Chris Livingston, Owner and Buyer,
The Book Shelf, Winona, MN
and MBA Board Vice President
The MBA trade show is a very important part of my fall business strategy. I don’t have many reps that call on me down in Winona, and use the trade show to help build my purchase strategy for the fall shopping season. Although not every publisher will get an order from me that day (and I do place upwards of 20 orders each year at the show), I make title lists and order later, either direct or through wholesale channels.
I truly believe that as the business gets more and more competitive and difficult to navigate, the regional trade shows become an even more viable outlet for publishers to make their mark on booksellers. Actually, I thought that this year might offer opportunities for some publishers to actually increase their presence at the MBA trade show as other publishers might diminish their own, as this affords an even bigger impact in the minds of booksellers. Be aggressive and excited. This is still a wonderful time to be in the book business!

GENERAL INFORMATION
The Midwest Booksellers Association Trade Show is a MEMBERS-ONLY business meeting and exhibit which is not open to the general public. All exhibitors, booksellers, and other book industry attendees will need to be paid MBA members for the 2009-2010 membership year (starting 7/1/09) in order to participate.
MBA voting membership is open to retail bookstores both owned and operated in our member states, as well as to publishers, sales representatives, wholesalers and vendors who do business with our booksellers. Non-voting associate membership is open to others professionally allied to the book industry – prospective booksellers, national chain bookstores, libraries, authors, teachers, etc.
Members of the media who cover the book industry may attend, but they must contact the MBA office and provide press credentials in advance in order to receive press passes.
