Job Description: Full-Time Bookseller
 
Zenith Bookstore is looking to hire a full-time bookseller. We seek a dynamic, motivated, and high-energy individual for a 36-hour per week position.

Requirements for this position are:

  • Love of books and reading
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to give outstanding customer service in a retail setting. Comfort in greeting customers, and talking about and selling a range of books.
  • Graphic design and artistic skills so you can assist in creating signage throughout the store, and producing store displays, outside easel sign, flyers, etc.
  • Skilled at typing, on-line searching, and computer work.
  • Ability to carry boxes, which sometimes weigh 30-40 pounds. Our bookshelves are 8 feet high, which sometimes require getting on a step ladder, as well as kneeling on the floor.

 
These additional skills and interests would be a significant plus:

  • Ability and interest in developing social media content (Instagram, Facebook)
  • Knowledge of and passion for children's and youth literature. 

Responsibilities and Specific Tasks:

  • Providing excellent customer service
  • Shelving, and alphabetizing books
  • Maintenance to help keep the store clean, safe, and comfortable for customers. All staff have duties which include dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, trash and recycling, and cleaning the bathroom.
  • Merchandising and inventory, which includes receiving inventory, creating displays, organizing books and other inventory, and yearly inventory.
  • Use of our point-of-sale (POS) bookselling software (Bookmanager). Prior knowledge of this system is not required. We will train you. Point-of-sale transactions include sales, returns, and special orders. Our POS system is fairly sophisticated, as well as being the "nerve center" of our operations, and we require an individual who would enjoy learning, and eventually mastering, the system.
  • As a Zenith bookseller, you will be expected to keep up to date on current books, write shelf-talkers for store display, contribute to our monthly newsletter and website with staff picks, reviews, etc.

 
Ideal candidate will have

  • Love of books and of reading.
  • Prior experience in bookselling, publishing, and/or library work
  • Analytical skills with attention to detail. Ability to multitask and work under pressure.
  • Be confident, personable, outgoing. Ability to work in a team.
  • Enjoys working in a  retail environment and able to give great customer service.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Understands Zenith Bookstore's vision and values.

 
Other
This position has room for growth. We are looking for an individual with leadership abilities who can take initiative and play a significant role in the store's growth. The store values its partnerships with schools and many community and non-profit groups in the Twin Ports. There may be times when you will be asked to be "the face" of Zenith Bookstore, and you should be comfortable doing outreach and being an enthusiastic representative of the store.
 
Schedule
Full time / 36 hours per week. Ability to work either Saturday and/or Sunday. There is flexibility in the schedule, and also a possibility of some work from home, if assisting with developing social media content.
 
Compensation and What We Offer
Our work environment is fun and sometimes intense, with a close-knit, dedicated staff. Starting salary is $18 per hour, with adjustment based on experience. We offer some flexibility in schedule, sick leave, a graduated schedule of paid vacations, and 35% employee discount.
